Hoseo University Library Solo Exhibition Seoul
It’s always extra exciting to have an exhibition in another country and I am delighted to announce my solo exhibition “Lands and Legends” just opened at the ultra modern Hoseo University Library in their beautiful gallery space at the Asan Campus in South Korea.
This exhibition grew from a culmination of research on the folklore of Korea and a selection of paintings from my ongoing series of “The Land Of Gemini”, my land of mystical landscapes.
During my first exhibition in Seoul at StART Art Fair, many visitors were intrigued by the narratives behind my paintings based on the poignant book “The Fairy Stories of Oscar Wilde”. The interest in these painting’s stories inspired me to create a new series rooted in Korean folktales. My deep interest in folklore led me to explore the connections between Irish and Korean storytelling traditions. While Irish folktales often have tragic endings, Korean tales tend to conclude on a hopeful note – a contrast that fascinates me. Both cultures share motifs of magical animals, particularly rabbits and deer, and themes of discovering great treasures. In Irish folklore, the leprechaun’s crock of gold is legendary, while in Korea, treasures found by good-hearted individuals remain intact, yet transform when claimed by the greedy – mirroring the shape-shifting elements in Irish myths.
Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the exhibition this time but I look forward to returning to South Korea in the future.
I would like to thank The Irish Ambassador in South Korea Michelle Winthrop and the embassy’s Public Affairs Officer Minjeong Chang, StART Art Korea and of course Hoseo University for making this exhibition possible.
