Flight Of Dreams

Amelia Earheart Painting

Amelia Earhart flew in her mind before she flew in reality and that is what I would like to express in this piece. Amelia lying in her bed dreaming of her flying ambitions, her bedspread covered in bird feathers to symbolise the freedom of a bird she must have imagined she would feel when flying. Our minds need to be nurtured and encouraged especially for women to do things that are not always put forth as something females normally do. When you see children’s toys that have pilots in them the figures are always male, this conditioning starts from when we are children. What Earhart did and in an era when women were excluded from being commercial pilots is nothing short of courageous, inspirational and legendary.

“Flight Of Dreams” was shortlisted and given an honourable mention for the “Earhart Art Prize 2024” presented by Greater Shantallow Community Arts in collaboration with City of Derry Airport and The National Gallery Art Road Trip to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s historic solo transatlantic flight.
